Published in 1989, The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture was a hefty one-volume work organized into 24 thematic sections. To be issued over a five-year span, this new edition, which began with the appearance of Volume 1: Religion and Volume 2: Geography earlier in 2006, will consist of 24 separate volumes, each focusing on a particular topic, not all of which correspond to the sections in the original compendium. Wilson, coeditor of the first edition and director of the Center for Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, serves as general editor of this edition as well as editor of volumes 3 and 4.
Following the same format, each volume contains two alphabetical sequences, the first providing longer thematic essays and the second featuring shorter entries on topics and individuals. Many of the articles that appeared in the first edition have been expanded, others have received slight revisions or updated bibliographies, and some have been completely rewritten by different contributors. Of the 118 entries in the History volume, 22 are new. In addition to multiple articles that significantly expand coverage of southeastern Indians, other new entries include Clinton, Bill; Cold war; Slave revolts; and Voting Rights Act. Bringing together an eclectic assortment of 95 articles, Myth, Manners, and Memory features 19 new entries, among them Black collectibles , Clocks and time , Graceland , and Sexuality. Both volumes include black-and-white illustrations and contributor and subject indexes.
The disadvantages resulting from assigning entries to thematic sections rather than adopting a straightforward alphabetical sequence were problematic in the original edition, and the 24-volume format makes accessibility even more difficult. Not only are there no cross-references between entries or volumes but publication plans do not mention the eventual provision of an overall index to the set. The lack of these features seriously diminishes the encyclopedia’s effectiveness as a reference source. How many users will guess correctly that the article Lynching is located in the Myth, Manners, and Memory volume rather than in the History volume? Moreover, the per-volume price will result in a total of $958.80 for the hardback version of the encyclopedia, a sharp contrast to the earlier edition’s price of $59.95 and a sum that will undoubtedly put the set beyond the reach of many libraries (although paperback volumes are available for $19.95 each). Nevertheless, this New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture is authoritative and well written, reflecting recent developments in the South as well as new directions in scholarly approaches to southern studies. It is recommended for all academic libraries and for larger public and high-school libraries, particularly those in southern states. Marie Ellis
